On the new and ending the old

Yesterday, I stumbled upon a document on my computer titled, Morning Pages.  For the past five years I’ve kept up with the practice on and off, ever since completing The Artists Way, (highly recommended).  It’s the practice of free writing three pages each morning, to spill your every thought and question, thus creating home for them, so that the open spaces of your brain can be filled with creative energy.  It’s never meant for anyone else to read, so there’s no pressure to spin words perfectly and it does wonders for a head that feels blurry and full—you know, when you’re grasping for thoughts, but they flutter just out of your reach like colorful butterflies in hyper drive when you are stuck in slow motion.

When I opened this document, I expected to see the last date of 12.26.12, instead, it was 12.28.11.  Apparently there are a few of these floating around the corners of my computer memory, but a funny thing happened, as I glanced over the words I had written a year ago, they carried the same questions, truths, and dreams that were on my heart a year later.  Almost identical. And that’s not to say that there hasn’t been growth in this year of 2012, but in the area of creativity and business, I know the journey is so young.  This blog is nothing if not a testament to the various creative enterprises that I’ve tested out and all of them had lead me one step closer to here or there, whatever “that” place is.  I don’t consider them failures, because with each one I learned, expanded my skills, and perhaps, found the courage to try something new.

When I read the words I wrote from last December, it was just the push I needed to take yet another step.  For a while now, months, even longer, I’ve been weary of selling my art online.  As an artist, a piece of my heart goes into everything I make and then to slap a price on it and say, “hey hey, pick me, pretty please”  is the opposite of inspiring, it’s almost soul-quenching.  It interferes with my creative process as occasionally the thought will swirl around, could I sell this?  And that’s the killer right there.  I will never stop making art, ever, not even if my hands fall off, but I’m tired of the selling lingering in the back of my mind.

And while I have some ideas that I will be pursuing during this next part of the adventure, I have come to a great understanding, or rather have come to the same understanding in a greater way,

I want to write.

I want to write.

I want to write.

Sure, I could do both, but I found myself in a fearful place, when this truest words resounded from my most honest soul, but if I don’t sell my art online, will I still be “considered” an artist?  How will people find my work?  Can you even stand the putrid nonsense of that? I can’t.  Of course, I’m an artist, of course.  Shut up.  And I suppose that when it comes down to it, the right people will always find you, if you are following your heart. If you are taking brave steps that lead you to doors waiting to be opened.   If you roar your dreams into the night sky, they will not go unheard.  The internet is just a tool, a silly/useful tool.

To be even more vulnerable, in the early fall, when I was considering this, I dared to suggest to God, that if I closed my shop, how would extra money even come?  Ha, as if the great creator of the universe was limited to supplying our needs via my tiny little website. And, as it happened, I haven’t sold a piece of art online since August, not a single one.   I know, what a ridiculous thing to say.  I don’t recommend it.

And then the inevitable question that we all come to when we are going forward in any part of life, will you surrender the good for something better?  Your hands will be empty for a while, but only then can they be filled again.  Sometimes, the “good” isn’t really much of anything is, we’re just afraid to let go and hold on to that which we can’t see, because, then what?

Well.. then anything, really.

And I like possibilities, you know.

All of this to say, I’m closing the shop for an indefinite amount of time on Monday, the 31st.   So if there is anything you’d like to order, do so this weekend.  If there are any original paintings that you have been wanting, send me a message about any offers (I’m open).

As to whatever happens next, I will be writing it here.

With 2013 just around the next Monday, I am filled with excitement for the new days and opportunities, for the friends that will be made, for the places we will go, for the creativity that will fuel and connect us, for the encouragement and signs that will carry us forward to what awaits.

Molly: You remember when I was a little girl and I could play Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto and everyone was talking about my potential?

Mr. Magorium:  Mhhm.

Molly: Well, I am 23 now and everyone's still talking about my potential but if you ask ‘em to play the song I know best... I'll still play Rachmaninov's Second.

Mr. Magorium: May I suggest you stun the world with Molly Mahoney's First?

Shop Update

Tree Series Note Cards Gift Set

While we are slowly working on growing our collection of cards for our Furthermore Creative line, we are now able to turn some of our favorite prints into note cards too.  This is something I envisioned years ago and it’s finally happening.  It’s been amazing to see the results of ideas that have been simmering for quite a while now.

Tree Series Note Cards Gift Set

My newest note card gift set features the three prints from the Tree Series, which are some of my all-time favorites.  It includes Silent Song, Dancing Blossoms, and Yellow Blooms. They are blank inside, because you don’t need my words, when you have your own and measure 5x7 inches.

Find them here.

Patchwork Collage Note Card Gift Set

This set joins my newest designs, the Patchwork Collage note cards. Have you seen them yet?  Wouldn’t they be the perfect treat for a long distance friend?

This week is jam packed with projects, finishing touches on designs for a fundraiser, knitting scarves, a top secret Christmas gift, an alternation, and sending out my packages for the Holiday gift swap!  What are your creative goals for this week?

Announcing Furthermore Creative!

image

We just launched our newest project, a collaboration between husband and wife, Furthermore Creative is your solution to the so-so greeting cards.  After years of searching and searching tirelessly for a good card that we didn’t already give each other, we finally set out to make our own.  We are proud of all these designs and would give them to each other in a heart beat.

The drawings are done and editing by that talented husband of mine, the rest we do together. We will be adding new designs frequently.

Our inspiration is simple, our love.

We hope that you visit the shop and then feel free to make us famous.

jackie o. requests one print in two pieces.

Tonight I poured dark chocolate brownie batter over a layer of chocolate chip cookie dough, because Pinterest made me do it.  As one can assume, it was the right thing to do.

A few months ago, my dear friend, Jackie O., or Sara, as most call her ordered one of my prints, I asked her how big she wanted it, she said, can you split it in two?  Well, I had never thought of that before, such destruction of my beloved piece, but guess what, it turned out amazingly, and one might even say better than the original.

And now it’s in the shop.

open the door and come on in…

Also known as a shameless little plug for my shop, today I wanted to show you want you might find if you ventured to my little spot in the world of Etsy.  To be honest, I haven’t added many new products, but I do have something new coming soon, well, it’s mostly new, or rather a fun twist on something old.  And while my focus lately have been in sewing, I will forever be a painter.

If you like art, I’m guessing you do, then take a virtual stroll with my into my shop.

(click on any of the images to visit the shop.)

Prints.  I offer prints of my Trees Collection and the Paper Collage Series.  They come in a variety of sizes fro 8x10 to 20x24.  I must say that Silent Song holds a special place in my heart, do you have a favorite?

Fullscreen capture 6202011 22146 PM.bmp

Postcards.  Right now I offer two sets of postcards, they are romantic, sweet, and fun.  Better than Hallmark, because you know you already gave your lover all the good cards.

Fullscreen capture 6202011 22201 PM.bmp

Mixed Media Originals.  I love combining paint and canvas will all sorts of things like buttons, book pages, and embroidery hoops.  I had the best time making these.

Fullscreen capture 6202011 22216 PM.bmp

Original Paintings.  Right now I have just two of these in my shop.  The entire proceeds of the painting on the left, A Hymn of the River will go to A Beautiful Idea, which you can read more about by visiting this link.

There is folks, thanks for stopping by.  Just for fun, if you use the code, FREESHIPPING, you can get exactly that, free shipping on everything in the shop.  Oh and I wouldn’t hate it if you wanted to spread the word about my art, wouldn’t hate it at all.

maker of art. not seller.

IMG_3962
It’s been far too long since I’ve made any new art.  I moved, then was super sick(pregnant), then super pregnant and then had a baby, and now my time is in high demand from these two kiddos. Plus, I have this blog, which I really enjoy. This leaves my etsy shop  rather neglected, collecting virtual dust.
Here’s the thing.
I love making art…. BUT
I don’t enjoy trying to sell it.  I’m not a marketer.  I’m not a seller.  I just like creating things.  I like sewing. I like painting. I like designing. I like knitting.  But I really don’t like trying to tell other people why they need what I make.  If you love it and you want it, you would know.  No clever arrangement of words could convince you of this. Truthfully, if you have to be convinced that you want something, you don’t really want it at all.  In a perfect world, I would hire someone to market and sell my art, but that’s not going to happen any time soon, unless they would accept compensation in coffee and baked goods.
The idea of spending my limited free time spreading the word about my work, across the endless trails of social networking makes me feel crazy, and not in a good way. It actually makes me less creative, when I’m trying to be something that I really know I’m not.  And as an artist it is important to be aware of the obstacles that block your creative flow and get them out of the way.
The creative journey is ever changing.  Not everything you stumble across is meant to be a permanent part of your craft.  A few years ago, when I had my little boy, I started making these cute little giraffe toys.  Originally, they were going to be gifts, then I thought, I could sell these and I did, for a while.  But, if I just wanted to sew up the same thing in different color combinations time after time, I could find a job in a sweatshop.  I designed some postcards, which was super fun, but when I got caught up in thinking about selling them on a larger scale, I stopped coming up with good designs.  In the winters, I knit and sell scarves, but when the knitting turns into how fast can I do this, how many can I make… I stop enjoying it, plus it hurts my fingers.  And that brings me to my art.
I’ve written many times about why I create, I am an artist.  I believe that a piece of art can move you, it can inspire you, it can refresh you and it can help you connect to your maker, the grandest artist, God.  Art is a way of life.  Years ago, Banana Republic used this line in their ad campaign, Finding the art in everyday.  It’s my motto.  It’s how I see the world, as a masterpiece created to inspire, challenge, and encourage us.  This is what makes me feel the most alive.  Trying to be a seller of art causes me to feel the opposite.
I’ve considered closing my etsy shop before, but always stalled at the idea that it couldn’t hurt to just keep it open.  I would say, if I sold something, great, if not, okay.  But, I don’t want to do anything half-heartedly, that’s the worst.  The shop has become just that.  As if, I must keep up the façade that I am actually interested in selling, branding, marketing, and such.  Would I just love to bring in some income because of my art? SURE. Yes. OF COURSE.  But, I think it’s time to let this part go.
How do I know it’s the right time to close up shop?  Well, in the past two days that I have been considering/battling this idea, I have felt more inspired than I have in ages.  AGES.  I almost feel the ideas swirling around in my head.  I’ve started seeing things in an artistic way again. You know, when an idea makes something flutter inside your soul… when you see an image that floods you with a refreshing breath of air.  That’s the kind of stuff that is happening again and I’ve missed that.
I’ve heard this saying several different ways, sometimes you have to let go of the good to make room for the best.  That’s where I am now.  I could keep up the little shop drudgingly, or I could let it go and discover what is next for my art.  I’m choosing the latter and risking, well, hardly anything.  (Except I’ll be a blogger without an etsy shop. Gasp.) I would rather be an artist who actually makes art.
Thanks for your support of my little online shop, it does mean the world to me.  I’m keeping it open until the end of March, in case you want to purchase a print or original painting.  I’d be happy to send it your way.
---
What about you friends, have you ever had to let something go, to make room for something better, in a creative sense?  Are you scared to make the cut?  What have you go to lose? What could you gain?

The Mouse & Monkey

We received the most lovely package in the mail a few weeks ago from one of my favorite people in the world, no… the universe.  My college roommate is one of the most talented and creative people I know, except she’s all type-a and into science and details too.  Science and details make me want to cry.
Fun fact:  we were matched up to be roommates our freshman year and met the night before college orientation in Florida.  The next day everyone thought we had known each other for years.  We were roommates the next year and (not the next), but then our last year too.  We were in each other’s weddings.  And, I get to see her along with six of my other dearest friends this weekend. Glory!
Anyways, Erica sent us the most gorgeous quilt for our sweet little lady, I just adore it.  Isn’t it lovely?  Of course, she insisted that it actually be used instead of framed or something.  As you can see in my last post, we use it.  She said, '”Do you like it?  It seemed a little crazy to me, but then I realized it would be perfect for you, thus perfect for your daughter.”  She knows me like that.

I’m such a fan of everything that E makes that it delights me to tell you that she has officially opened her own etsy shop.  FINALLY.

The Mouse and Monkey is a children’s boutique that you won’t want to miss.  Be sure to check it out soon and often as she plans to fill the shop with so many wonderful goods for all the little boys and girls in your life.  In fact, stop reading my blog and go over there right now… and then tell everyone you know about it too.  Thanks.

I got lost… in etsy-land.

Since I’m not researching and hunting for cribs, swings, and all those big item essentials the second time around, I get to spend time perusing fun things like toys and clothes…

And you know that once you start looking on etsy, you’re in trouble… at least for the next hour or so.   Here are some  of sweet little toys that I found and I thought I’d share the fun with all of you.

{click the image to be directed to any of the shops.}

I just love the variety that you can find when you search for handmade unique toys, the major stores are generally stocked with toys that you might call generic and boring…  because obviously all little boy toys must be blue and little girls must have pink dolls*, right?  Wrongo, my friend.   You might pay a few more dollars for a handmade piece, but you know your getting something that was made by a person who loved what they were making rather than a machine… that is a machine.

And that’s all I have to say about that…

Another Top 10 coming later tonight.

*Most dolls are kinda creepy, no?
