The Sewing Report

    

 

First, the Explorer vest from Oliver + S, Little Things to Sew.  I skipped the size that said up to 3, since he’s almost three, but I apparently forget he’s the skinniest almost three ever. It will fit someone day.  Same fabric as the hat, but he’ll likely outgrow the hat before he can wear this, so no over-matching issues. That would be a disaster.

This was my practice for the LTTSA later on, there are some major problems with this one, but perfection is not required for playing outdoors, only for perfect land, where we do not reside. Next time, I want to use a solid fabric, this looks rather woodsman to me. Cute, but not my favorite.

My sister brought home this lovely, brown wool skirt from France, I knew it would make the perfect coat.  I used the Chic cocktail coat from Heidi & Finn.  The smallest size of the pattern is 12M/2T.  There are some 12 month clothes that do fit my sugarplum, so I thought she’d definitely be able to wear it this winter, ewww, winter.  Well turns out that super skinny almost three year old of mine could wear it now, so maybe next year for her.  I used the leather and circle closures from the skirt, instead of the bow suggested in the pattern, but I definitely plan on making another one with the giant bow. The world needs more giant bows, as far as I’m  concerned.

More like a tiny excuse for a sewing report, because there wasn’t much sewing this week, it felt like 10 different kinds of crazy.  I’m still working this dress and I kind of want one in my size. I’m considering adding a cute peter pan style collar or lace trim around the neck, but I’m not sure, what do you think?

And the weekend is upon us once more, so dependable that old Mr. weekend, always coming back to us and always leaving too soon.

1. Another pinafore dress, in this fabric. (P.S. I cut up my nursing cover. I never used it, besides would you like to eat with a sheet over your face?)

2.A blue & white jacket with ruffle detail.

3. A summery sleeper onesie for little boy or girl made from a t-shirt.  It’s tiny, newborn size maybe.  Into the gift pile it goes…

4. An airy flower jumper, made from a tank top and dress.

 

I have two more fun things in progress and I promise to share pictures of those pants that I have not touched since writing this post, we needed some time and distance.

The Summer Boy

It’s Celebrate the Summer Boy Week… and a certain child needs some warm weather clothing. Or a certain mama needs to wash the laundry more often.  I pick option A. Obviously.

Once upon a time, I transformed the plain v-neck into something much cooler, but the years had passed and it could be found crumpled and lonely in the dark recesses of my drawer. So, I cut it up and turned into a shirt for H.

As most would tell you, the best way to figure out how to sew something is to deconstruct it and put the pieces go back together.  That’s exactly what I did.  I like the loose neckline.  I also like that there are no monsters or Disney characters on it.  And it matches his eyes.

A little round-up of my latest sewing projects this week.

Sweet Pocket Pinafore dress.  Pattern: Heidi & Finn.  Fabric: Napsack in Berry

This pattern is super cute and very easy to follow.  In fact, all of her patterns are. I’m dying to make the cute pea coat pattern, but alas, I do hope winter will never come again.

 

I loosely followed this sweet cotton onesie tutorial from Prudent Baby.

 

Plaid shorts for the boy.  Dana from MADE has a great tutorial.

They are a little shorter than I wanted…still working on the perfect measurements.

 

This weekend, I’m gathering all the clothes we don’t wear and creating a pile that I will use to sew as many things as I can.  It will be fun to see what I can do with what we already have.

Prep School Rocker

If you think that I am in creative heaven with all this designing and sewing, you would be correct.  I go to bed sketching ideas.  I analyze the details and construction of every interesting article of clothing I see.  I pour over sewing blogs.  I slowly walk through the rows of fabric, feeling the threads and textures between my fingers.  Any chance I get, I’m sitting in front of my machine.  And I’ve never ever used an iron more in my life. (which wasn’t really that hard to do, since I never iron anything.)

I feel like I’m on the verge of something and I like this place.

This weekend, when my lover was working, the espresso was strong,  the rain was falling, the babies napping, and Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn  graced the screen with the magic that is Sabrina, I finished these hoodies for those cute little H’s of mine.

This was my first attempt using this pattern from Heidi & Finn.  I used an old, cheap cardigan that had seen better days, which is why it looks so forlorn. I mean, it’s cute, but definitely a trial piece.  Lots of room for improvement.

Next, I used one of Matt’s old sweatshirts that he never wears for this jacket for our favorite son.  I’m always asking, “Hey, are you ever going to wear this again?” He rolls his eyes and says, “No.  I don’t need any clothes.”  Cute husband.

If you must know, this is probably one of my favorite things that I have ever made, ever.  I have a thing for jackets which I wish to instill in my children. 

To me it feels like a classic little blazer turned rock n’ roll and what more could you want?
